Advantages:

•        the laser hardening process can be used for fully finished parts,
•        production cost can be reduced dramatically,
•        time of production can be shortened significantly
•        material cost can be reduced by the possibility of using cheaper material
•        quick, instant method
•        easily repairable, repeatable
•        only the surface will be modified, the core remains unchanged
•        compound structure can be reached with tough core and hard surface
•        the hardness of the the surface can be much higher than in the case of volume hardening
•        there is no distortion, deformation
•        in the deeper layers there is no recrystallization and grain coarsening
•        can be used selectively and precisely

    Disadvantages:

•        extended need of programming and preparation
•        relatively expensive because of the use of expensive technique,
•        single stripe or spot can be used at one time
•        back tempering at overlapping
•        not every kind of material can be hardened effectively
•        need of quality control and lab tests
